On July 6th, 2022, the Troy City Council adopted a resolution supporting “
Black Lives Matter” and formation of a “Reimagine Troy Justice Services Work Group” by a bi-partisan vote of 5-1. The work group will develop public safety policy and programmatic recommendations for the City of Troy to consider as part of then Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order 203. Their task was to hold listening forums and meet with stakeholders to gather public opinion, to research best practices in policing, and to develop policy recommendations that will identify the needs of the communities served by the Troy Police Department, and that will promote trust, fairness and legitimacy in law enforcement by addressing racial bias and disproportionate policing of communities of color as required by Executive Order 203.
The Council’s Public Safety Committee encourages Troy citizens who are interested in serving on the work group to apply. Letters of interest and/or resumes may be sent to the City Clerk at mara.drogan@troyny.gov.
Cuomo announced that he was launching the New York State Police Reform
and Reinvention Collaborative.
The “Say Their Name” Reform Agenda Package was signed Friday by Cuomo.
It includes:
- Allowing for transparency of prior disciplinary records of law enforcement officers by repealing 50-a of the civil rights law
- Banning chokeholds by law enforcement officers
- Prohibiting false race-based 911 reports
- Designating the Attorney General as an independent prosecutor for matters relating to the civilian deaths
