Lenore Doherty

Lenore Doherty was raised in the environment of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn NY in the 1970s and lived in the reality of racism and inequity. She knew how differently people of varied races are treated as her friends with different skin color were not recognized for school accomplishments, awards for athletic team participation and endured innumerable offenses that she did not. Lenore learned that color of skin was protective for some and hazardous for others.   She knows what it is like to be violently attacked for walking in a different neighborhood where “you don’t belong” even when you go to school there.  Growing up, she experienced racially motivated violence firsthand.

Professionally, Lenore has over 40 years’ experience in the medical field working as a Home Health Aide, Nursing Assistant, Nurse and Nurse Practitioner, and Director of Nursing.  Over that time, she has seen the medical field make enormous strides, with advances in science and technology that can provide longer life spans and a healthier quality of life. However, these opportunities are not shared equally.  She has also experienced gender inequity in her professional life receiving just 88 cents for every dollar her male counterparts made.

Lenore’s life bears witness to the presence of racism, economic inequity between genders, and many other forms of injustice.   By serving on the JCRC board, she will use my knowledge, background and experience to be a proactive voice for the voiceless to try to make a difference and  help pave the way for real solutions.
